Predator Free Wānaka’s focus is on setting up and maintaining predator traplines to target possums, ferrets, stoats, weasels, rats and hedgehogs in the Upper Clutha area. These animals are all introduced by humans to NZ, and predate on our native birds, lizards and insects who have not evolved defences to these types of predators. These efforts are part of the Predator Free 2050 mission.
The traplines are all close to various communities within the Upper Clutha and are looked after by volunteers, who are everyday people that love the outdoors and our native wildlife.
This free session will cover the predators that are being targeted by PFW, the different traps that can be used, and hands-on practice of safe operation of the traps. If you are keen to get trapping, you can then be signed up with a trapping group.
Once trained, you can join a local trapping group at a level that suits your lifestyle, whether that’s weekly, monthly or every so often. Volunteering is flexible and a great way to get outdoors while giving back to our environment.
